Maresca speaks out on Sterling’s case – England – Chelsea

Sterling is losing value.

Enzo Maresca was clear on the case of Raheem Sterling during the press conference on the eve of the Europa League play-off against Servette: “I’ve been honest, he won’t get minutes here. I’m not saying Raheem isn’t a good player, but I prefer different types of wingers. It’s simple.” Chelsea’s new manager has thus put an end to speculation about the future of the English winger, who is increasingly seen as a potential departure.

Since his arrival, Maresca has had to deal with a bloated squad of 41 players, including 13 forwards, which makes it difficult to manage playing time. After a disappointing summer preparation and a defeat against Manchester City in the opening of the championship, he clarified his position on the surplus players, including Sterling and Ben Chilwell, saying that they train separately and that it is impossible to satisfy them all.

Maresca explained his strategy as follows: “It’s impossible to keep everyone happy with such a large squad. I work with about 20 players, not 42. Those who want minutes should consider leaving.” A statement that marks a desire to reduce the workforce and tighten up the group to move forward in this new season.

Will this prevent the club from recruiting a dozen or so players before the end of the transfer window? Absolutely not.
