Next Tuesday’s hearing in the Marengo trial has been postponed. Lawyers Nico Meijering and Christian Flokstra had requested this after the arrest of colleague Inez Weski.
“The arrest of Mr. I. Weski last Friday shocked us,” write lawyers Meijering and Flokstra on Twitter. “In addition, we are currently unable to oversee the impact of that arrest and the underlying investigation on the Marengo case. For that reason, we have asked the court to postpone the hearing of Tuesday, April 25. The court has granted this request today.”
The program on Tuesday included the response of the defense to the Public Prosecution Service and the last word of suspect Mohamed R., who is assisted by Meijering and Flokstra.
Participation in a criminal organization
Inez Weski, the counsel of main suspect Ridouan Taghi in the Marengo trial, was arrested on Friday on suspicion of participation in a criminal organization. She is accused of passing messages to and from Taghi.
The arrest sparked outrage among lawyers. It is rare that a lawyer is arrested for participating in a criminal organization. Earlier, another lawyer of Taghi, his cousin, was sentenced to 5.5 years in prison for his role in the drug gang.
In the extensive Marengo criminal trial, life imprisonment has been demanded against several suspects, including main suspect Ridouan Taghi. According to the Public Prosecution Service, he was involved as a client in several murders and attempted murders. In 2019 he was arrested in Dubai and transferred to the Netherlands a few days later.
