Maren Lundby became “Name of the Year” – uses the award as a comeback motivation – VG

WON A PRIZE: Maren Lundby thanks everyone who voted for her.

Ski jumper Maren Lundby won “Name of the Year” at the Sports Gala – and promises that there will be motivation to get back on the ski jump.

– That I should run away with this award is almost a bit silly. I just have to thank everyone who has voted for me, then I will try to achieve something of the same as what the others have achieved. This was really big. I will use it further to motivate myself and come back, says Lundby in his speech of thanks.

“Name of the year” is awarded to the athlete who gets the most votes in the population.

– I was very surprised. There were very solid candidates nominated. They are absolutely unique. I just have to say thank you so much for the people voting for me in that company there, Lundby says to VG.

– What do you think you touch in people?

– I think I have focused my attention on a topic that many people obviously think they should focus on. I have the impression that people appreciate openness. I say things as they are.

Karsten Warholm won “Male Athlete of the Year” after his record year, and is full of praise for VG about the twin who won “Name of the Year”.

– I congratulated her and said that it is very nice that she uses her difficult position to do something that is perhaps bigger than her own slightly more selfish goal of achieving sports performance. She wins “Name of the Year” and is voted on by the people. They recognize this as a very important issue. It’s fantastic, says Sunnmøringen – who also served humor about his award-winning coach:

Lundby has made a name for itself in several areas in 2021.

In the WC in Oberstdorf, she won gold on the big hill, a race she herself was driving to get to the world championships.

– Together with the Olympic gold, it is the biggest thing I have experienced as an athlete. It was great to win the race I had fought for. I hope that people can also look at me as an athlete and not just connect me with equality and weight, says Lundby.

Later it became known that she would participate in the popular TV 2 program “Skal vi danse”, where she quickly became a viewer favorite.

Then she created real shock waves in the population when she weepily announced that she was going to lose this winter’s Olympics. The reason was that she was unable to meet the “extreme demands” associated with weight in the sport of jumping.

– I think many people have thoughts that you like to think you are alone about. I think it’s much, much easier when someone at the top talks about it. I think many younger people find this difficult, says Lundby about openness about the weight problem.

She has not jumped a single ski jump since she landed for gold in Oberstdorf. She also has no plans for training jumps on the slopes this winter. Everything is geared towards the next season.

– These days we are in the process of making a plan that will hopefully take me back to the ground next winter, Lundby says in cash.
