He is one of the most famous Czech actors. Women’s knees go weak at the sight of him. He still has the expression of a rascal. But under his rough skin hides a sensitive soul. Recently, the actor even admitted that he was going through a very difficult period when he tried to commit suicide.
The first time Marek Vasut appeared in front of the camera at the age of five in a family comedy Katya and the crocodile. Back then, probably no one knew that a small boy with disheveled hair would grow into a star of Czech and international stature. Today, at the age of 64, he is a recognized actor, voice actor and icon of elegance. But the road to success was not so easy.
“When I was younger, I had a tendency to argue with the screenwriter and the director that the character wouldn’t say it like that. And certainly not with this sentence,” the actor recalls his beginnings. “Today, as a pre-retiree, I’m perfectly fine with the director, that is, the client of the work, telling me to put the stove here in the corner, even if the chimney outlet is a meter away, and put it at an angle.”
Cons? No problem!
Although he is known for his villainous roles, he does not take this as a limitation. On the contrary, he sees an advantage in it: “They bring a great advantage, because playing Mirek Dušín in a way that doesn’t annoy people with how exemplary he is is a much greater art than playing villains.”

His talent did not go unnoticed abroad. He made it all the way to Hollywood, where he played, for example, in the legendary Mission Impossiblemost recently he can be seen in the British crime series Slow Horses. And while he had the opportunity to further his career abroad, he never aspired to a permanent move. “To have a really long career, you have to move to Hollywood, the eye of the hurricane, and work there and try to break through. And I never had such a strong desire in me. It is without guarantee. 99.9 percent will fail!”
Hard skin on the eye
Although many perceive him as a man with a tough skin, he himself sees it differently: “Hard skin… you know, that’s a bit of a cliché. In short, I look the way I look. I’m a tall, bald guy, I probably don’t seem like a lovable grandpa at first glance.” he says about himself. But fans needn’t be afraid of him: “People ask for a photo on a regular basis, and I try to accommodate.”
Although he does not reject nice fans, he is not one of those who look for parties and merriment. Even among his colleagues, he is more of an introvert and a bit of a freak. The actor admits that his temperament, which is slightly hot-tempered, is also to blame. And something else.
Recently, Marek Vasut resorted to a very personal confession. He revealed that he struggles with depression. In 2000, his mental health rested on the brink and the gifted artist took his own life. “On June 6, 2000, under the influence of long-term untreated depression, I decided to voluntarily leave my life,” he confided that the situation was repeated several years later.
Fortunately, he managed to tame his inner demons. He realizes that the combination of alcohol and untreated depression is a road to hell. At the same time, he realistically admits that he unfortunately does not have a cure for the soul. “I have to take medicine and go to therapy. It’s a long run,” he admitted some time ago and did not comment further on his condition. After all, he guards his privacy like a perch, and if he does give an interview, the charming actor usually focuses on neutral topics, such as his growing years.
Aging? With humor!
Although he refers to himself as “pre-retired”, he takes aging in stride. “Just because I don’t mind talking about aging doesn’t mean it doesn’t get on my nerves. It angers me how my strength is waning. You keep refueling, but the engine is worn out, the gasket is leaking. What is supposed to work doesn’t work, what should go smoothly does work. Or something will hurt you.’
A seducer? Nowhere
And how is Marek Vasut with women? Many would think, and the media helped a lot, that the charismatic artist has no shortage of women and could be considered a seducer. But the opposite is true. His introverted nature indicates that establishing and especially maintaining relationships is not easy for him, and only a few true loves have passed through his arms. Yet he is not alone. “My chihuahua always makes me happy. I have two, older Verunka, who is 11 years old, and 11-month-old Růženka. She recently had an operation for such a lady thing, but her scar has already healed and she’s on a rampage like before. A dog is a love machine,” the sympathetic artist softened.
