Marcus Miller: Legendary Jazz Bassist Live in Niort | Jazz Niort Festival 2021

Marcus Miller is in Niort this Thursday evening. A genius bassist, he has worked with the greatest of jazz like Miles Davis, Aretha Franklin and Claude Nougaro. It is a funk and jazz specialist who will be on the big stage.

Marcus Miller has always been immersed in music. His father was a pianist and organist and taught his son to play. But one day, young Marcus heard The Jackson Five, the band of Michael Jackson and his brothers and he had an epiphany. “Mickael Jackson was so gifted, I was so inspired by his music, he was amazing, he was 10, so was I.” And he became a musician, bassist in this case. A few years later, he met Miles Davis with whom he worked for many years. “He was my hero, like all jazz musicians”. And he evokes it in music, to listen to below.

But Marcus Miller is also a creator, a composer and he gave his letters of nobility to Slap, this technique which consists in producing percussion sounds on an instrument which is not made for it. The slap was invented by Larry Graham in the late 60s. It mixed thumb strikes on the strings with slaps on the treble strings.

Marcus Miller even gives us a demonstration in this video below.
