Marcus Fernaldi Gideon’s Retirement Decision Sparks Controversy: Father Speaks Out

Bogor

Gideon’s grace speak up about the decision Marcus Fernaldi Gideon who decided to retire from professional badminton. He actually regrets it, but still respects his child’s decision.

Marcus announced his resignation via social media on Saturday (9/3/2024). This decision was taken after much consideration and discussion with the people closest to him, including his wife and parents.

Even so, Kurniahu admitted that he did not agree with his son’s decision. He regretted it because Marcus was considered to still have the potential to compete.

“Indeed, we often talk that he wants to leave Pelatnas. I said it’s a shame, he trains for one day here, maybe another 2-3 years at most,” said Kurniahu to journalists in the Bogor area, Sunday (10/3 /2024).

“But (Marcus answered), ‘No, sir, I’ll just withdraw from Pelatnas’. This is all Marcus’s own decision, if that’s the case, I can’t do anything,” he said.

Kurniahu expressed his opinion that he regretted that Marcus’ decision to retire was based on the lack of prominent men’s doubles after the Minions era.

“In world badminton, the game is just like that, no one stands out. The proof is, currently (men’s doubles) is ranked number one in the world, but in the next three months it has dropped. That’s a lot,” said Kurniahu.

“I saw that he (Marcus) was very good with Kevin (Sanjaya Sukamuljo), ranked number one in the world for five years. In 2017 and 2018 he continued to win. Now, I see him winning here (one tournament), then losing,” Kurniahu emphasize.

In this regard, Kurniahu also cannot force his child to continue playing. Especially if you have to be paired with a new duet partner, it’s different with Kevin.

“Indeed, if you have a new partner, it’s frankly a bit difficult. From the bottom up, maybe from international (tournament level) or something, it takes time. I’ve also persuaded him but he answered like that, so I can’t do anything,” said Kurniahu.

“The potential for the next 2-3 years is possible with Kevin. But it’s all his decision PBSI. If there is a problem, the player should be called, but maybe I don’t know. “Until now, PBSI has never been called,” he said.
