The Swedes were unlucky with various penalties – which gave them tough extra time in the hunt for a top spot.
Ericsson was forced to leave the depot early when the fuel ran out and the depot was closed due to an incident, and was punished with extra time.
In a situation when he was fifth in the competition.
– I’m very disappointed. We have been one of the fastest cars all this month. We also made a good start and had a good result in progress. I think I did everything right, but we have to try to get a little post in sometime, because then it can be really good, says Marcus Ericsson to SVT Sport.
Ericsson could, however, in the end rejoice in becoming the best Swede, with a final eleventh place.
Rosenqvist in depot eight laps before goal
Felix Rosenqvist, in turn, drove too fast in the depot at the depot stop, and was punished with extra time.
– It must have been extremely little over, like 0.1 kilometers, so I was quite shocked actually. That’s how the rules are, but it feels sour, says Felix Rosenqvist to SVT Sport.
Rosenqvist was in the lead with eight laps left (out of 200 in total) – but was forced to a fuel stop, and then the chances of victory also disappeared.
What had saved Rosenqvist at that stage was if the safety car came out on the track, but it never did.
– We took a chance on a “fuelsave” (save fuel) at the end and hoped that the safety car would come out again, but it never happened, and then I had to go to the depot again, and then we came out far behind instead, says Felix Rosenqvsit.
The winner was 46-year-old Brazilian Helio Castroneves – who became historic with his fourth victory in the Indy 500.
Castroneves who goes by the nickname “Spider-Man” for his patented victory gesture as he climbs the fence towards the audience after his victories. Castoneves decided the race two laps from goal, winning ahead of Spaniard Alex Palou.
