VARBERG. A month and a half ago, he was forced to end his career urgently due to the back injury.
Now, after surgery, Marcus Berg is completely pain-free.
– It’s absolutely crazy, I feel great, says the former IFK Gothenburg star.
Quick version
After being forced to end his football career due to back injuries, Marcus Berg, former star of IFK Gothenburg, is now completely pain-free after the operation. He is not ready to bear full weight yet, but can now walk and stand without pain, which was the first goal of the rehabilitation. There is speculation about a future leadership role for Berg in IFK Gothenburg, something both he and the club’s technical director Ola Larsson are open to.

A long and successful career ended abruptly on September 25. Then Marcus Berg announced that the back injury he had been suffering from for a long time had worsened.
He was discharged at Gamla Ullevi and a few days later he underwent an operation. At the same time, IFK Göteborg fell into a deep slump in form, and only managed to save the Allsvenskan contract late in stoppage time in the last round.
It was therefore a two-way relieved Berg who met Sportbladet after Blåvitt’s victory against Varberg.
– It was terrible to stand on the sidelines. We live for this, and it has been damn tough at times. Now we solved the contract, which is a great feeling. At the same time that you have this feeling that “hell, we shouldn’t be in this situation”.

He broke down and cried with relief right at the final whistle. But when he meets a moment later in the catacombs of the arena, it is also a new Berg. He stands straight in the back and for those who have seen him standing bent over with back pain after matches, he now seems a couple of centimeters taller.
– This is absolutely crazy, just that I can stand like this. I feel great, the surgery went great. Today I am pain free, which was the goal. Then I’m not ready to be able to put a lot of weight on it, but being able to walk and stand without pain has been the first goal. And there I really am. So that’s great.
So you shouldn’t have to get any future though?
– No, it depends on how the rehab goes. It’s a long rehab and it’s important to take it step by step. But this very first feeling is great. The goal is to be able to exercise, run, be with the children and maybe tie the shoes and have a leadership role. Then whether it is with children, young people or seniors, we don’t know.
There is talk of a leadership role of some kind in IFK Gothenburg.
– We talk, have talked and will talk. We’ll see what options there are, what I want and what the club wants.
IFK Gothenburg’s technical director Ola Larsson is interested in a continuation at the club for Berg.
– “Mackan” is the kind of person I personally want to keep here in some form. He has a huge amount of experience, so that would be great. But he has to find himself, it has been a process to go from being a player to “what happens now?”. I think he’ll have to take the time it takes. We are here if he is interested.
