Marcos Jr. Confirms Philippines Will Not Join ICC Again

President Filipina Ferdinand Marcos Jr confirms his country has no plans to rejoin International Criminal Court (ICC). Philippines out of ICC after the court investigated the former President Rodrigo Duterte above drug war deadly during his reign.

As reported AFPMonday (1/8/2022), Marcos Jr. stated that the Philippines will not join the ICC as ICC prosecutors seek to continue their investigation into Duterte, who has ended his term since June 30.

Duterte pulled the Philippines out of the ICC in 2019, after the start of an initial investigation into a drug crackdown operation that killed thousands of people under his rule.

ICC judges authorized a full investigation into the anti-drug operation since September last year, calling it a systematic and unlawful attack against civilians.

The ICC investigation was suspended two months later, after the Philippines said it would conduct its own investigation. But ICC prosecutor Karim Khan stated in June that Manila’s request to suspend the investigation was unjustified and the investigation should be restarted “as soon as possible”.

Marcos Jr., who supported the Duterte-era drug war, had previously indicated he would not cooperate with the ICC. In the latest statement on Monday (1/8) local time, Marcos Jr. gave further confirmation.

“The Philippines has no intention of rejoining the ICC,” Marcos Jr said while speaking to local reporters.
