After 40 years, the boxing Mexico had the luxury of winning another silver medal at the Olympic Games.
The person responsible was Marco Alonso Greenwho took silver in the men’s 71 kg boxing category at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games after losing the final against the Uzbek Asadkhuja Muydinkhujaev by 5-0, unanimous decision of the referees, in a vibrant Stadium of Roland Garros.
The last time a Mexican boxer had managed to win the silver medal at the Olympic Games was when Hector Lopez Colin He was crowned Olympic runner-up in the bantamweight category in Los Angeles 1984.
Thus, a new golden page was written in the history of the Verde sporting family. Marco is the son of Manuel “Sammy” Verdewho was also an Olympian: the father of the Paris 2024 medallist had competed in the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games and was now able to proudly enjoy his son standing on the podium at the Games.
Marco Verde, the young man who had started his sporting adventure in baseball, and who later dedicated himself to boxing despite his father’s decision, thrilled all the boxing fans in his country.
“I played baseball for about seven or eight years. I never imagined being a boxer.. I only saw it on TV, because my father was a boxer before, he never instilled it in me, he never wanted to (…). He preferred me to be a baseball player, but one day he took me [a ver boxeo] and I just chose it. I think I felt like this was what I was meant to do,” Verde had told Olympics.com in a pre-Games interview.
During the fight, Verde was unable to dominate from the start. In the first two rounds, the Uzbek imposed himself with clear punches and better foot mobility throughout the ring, while the Mexican tried in vain to connect with his shots. Already in the last round, Verde, aware of his partial disadvantage on the scorecards, went out to look for the KO with impetus. Although he did not achieve it, the five judges gave him the victory in the third round.
However, the final scorecard of each of the judges reflected defeat for the Mexican.
Thus, at 22 years old, Verde confirmed himself as the great and successful reality of Mexican amateur boxing: to gold in the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games and of the Central American and Caribbean Games San Salvador 2023 This medal was added to his list, the most important of his career: a silver medal at the Olympic Games.
