The president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, has chosen Latino Senator Marco Rubio to occupy the position of Secretary of State, according to sources cited by the Reuters agency, which are in line with information published earlier by The New York Times.
Neither party has confirmed the appointment and some media warn that the decision is not final. The 53-year-old senator from Florida, who was suggested as a possible candidate for vice president on the Republican ticket, would thus become the first Latino at the head of American diplomacy.
Rubio was elected senator in 2010, becoming the first son of Cuban immigrants with a seat in the upper house. In the Senate he has stood out as a foreign policy hawk, taking tough stances on China and Iran in particular.
He has also supported sanctions against Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua. Currently, he is vice president of the Senate Select Committee on Foreign Intelligence and is also a member of the Foreign Relations Committee of that chamber.
Gone are the times when Trump belittled the senator, whom he called “little Marco,” when he was his most prominent rival in the 2016 Republican presidential primaries. He, tired of that contempt, stood up at a rally: “Now You know what they say about guys with small hands. “You can’t trust them!” he said of the now president-elect. Those wounds healed.
Rubio has been campaigning in the recent presidential elections alongside Donald Trump, especially at rallies in places with a significant weight of Latino voters. The growing support of that population group has been key for Trump to have won the elections in several states and for him to have won on a national scale in the popular vote against Kamala Harris.
The position of Secretary of State is one of the highest profile in the Administration and the highest ranking in the Cabinet after the president himself and the vice president. If the appointment is confirmed, Rubio would land in office at a time of conflict and uncertainty on the geostrategic board.
Among his priorities upon assuming office would be the not easy task of bringing Russia and Ukraine to negotiate to end the war. Along with this, he should pay attention to the evolution of the war in Gaza and Lebanon, where Trump has promised his support for Israel.
A Catholic, Rubio is against abortion even in cases of incest or rape. The exception is only allowed in cases of danger to the mother’s life.
