Florida Senator Marco Rubio, 53 years old and the son of Cuban immigrants, is emerging as the favorite to lead the State Department of the US starting in January, once Donald Trump assumes the presidency, which would make him the first Latino to hold this position.
Neither Trump nor Rubio have confirmed the appointment, which, however, is already taken for granted by sources consulted by the main American media, including ‘The New York Times’, ‘The Washington Post’ or the network CNN.
The senator is already part of the Senate Foreign Commission. trump considered naming the senator as his running mate in these presidential elections, although he finally opted for JD Vance.
Rubio, who speaks perfect Spanish, may also be great support for foreign policy of the Trump Administration in relation to Latin America and the strategic objectives of the United States in the region. Throughout his political career, Rubio has continued positions of the Republican hard wing and, for example, has advocated toughen pressure on the governments of Venezuela or Cuba.
In relation to open conflicts in different parts of the world, Rubio has come to vote against a military aid package to Ukraine and suggested the start of negotiations with Russia, while he has drawn a strong line of support for Israel on the multiple fronts it has open, even questioning the need for a ceasefire in the area.
Rubio is also in the China sanctions ‘blacklist’ for his positions in the Senate and has agreed with Trump that European allies must acquire more prominence in security issues and increase defense spending, so his rise may have an echo within NATO and the European Union .
