Marco Reus will leave Borussia Dortmund at the end of the season

Marco Reus will leave the Borussia Dortmund in the summer after he and the club announced they had agreed to part ways, ending the midfielder’s 12-year career with the German team.

The contract of Reus, who is 34 years old, ends at the end of the season, but unlike a year ago, when they extended the agreement, now it is time for everyone to go their own way.

“The team and I have come to the decision not to extend my contract,” the former team captain said in a video message to Dortmund fans.

“I am incredibly proud and very grateful to have been able to play for this team for so many years,” he said in his message, translated by the team. “It’s a little complicated for me now to find the right words. However, it is important for me to tell you, the fans, first.”

Reus arrived at Dortmund when he was six years old and spent almost a decade in their youth system. He rejoined Dortmund from Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2012.

“Marco Reus is one of the team’s great players,” team general manager Hans-Joachim Watzke said in a statement Friday. “His connection with Borussia Dortmund is extraordinary. We wish Marco the best in the future. We very much hope that he will return to BVB after his playing career, because here in Dortmund many exciting challenges await him.”
