Marco Odermatt always at full speed

The World Cup season is now in the history books, but Marco Odermatt’s schedule remains very busy. The winner of the great globe is in demand as never before, from all sides.

Marco Odermatt has had an extraordinary season.

Less than 30 hours elapsed between the photo session with the Schweizer Illustrierte on Monday noon in Méribel, the evening talk show in Salzburg, the media appointment at his supplier Stöckli in Malters and the meeting with his family, friends, its partners and sponsors in Rickenbach, in the canton of Lucerne.

Luckily, Marco Odermatt is just as comfortable off the slopes as he is on his skis, where he managed, in his own words, a ‘perfect season’. A spontaneous smile, a well-felt response or even a simple nod at the right time when listening to someone, the maturity and interpersonal skills of the young 24-year-old Nidwalden are remarkable in all circumstances. And despite the fatigue after a grueling season, Odi still seems to have reservations.

Swiss double when he wins

It was at Stöckli in Malters that Marco Odermatt had a good time. When developing the vision for competitive sport five years ago, Stöckli believed that “maybe the biggest thing we could win would be the Adelboden giant or the Wengen downhill. But we would never have thought that one day we would win the general classification of the World Cup with a Swiss”, in the words of his boss, Marc Gläser.

The CEO is not afraid that his colt will change equipment supplier after next season, when the contract extended a year ago will come to an end: “Marco is now part of the Stöckli family. What’s great about him is that when he wins, it automatically means a Swiss double.”

An unpretentious star

Like Roger Federer, Odermatt is a humble gifted man who sometimes has whims, but who, despite his successes, has no pretensions. He also knows how to be clear in his communication. Stöckili Race Director Beni Matti even described Odermatt’s flair for skis as “priceless”: “His feedback is top notch. He always gives us either black or white and never anything in between. both.”

Before thinking of resting, Odermatt will end the season by testing equipment. From next Monday, the giant Olympic champion will test in Samnaun. Very applied, the winner of the general classification also sees “a certain potential to find another one or two percent”. But before that, Odermatt will still participate in the Swiss Championships in St. Moritz, certainly on Saturday in giant, but probably also the day before in Super-G.
