On Thursday it was exactly six years ago to the day that Marco Friedl (25) signed with Werder. In the meantime, the central defender has long since become a regular player from a loan from Bayern and even captain in 2022. The Austrian has recently stabilized after inconsistent performances in the first half of the season. One reason why Werder got off to a successful start in 2024 with four points from two games and even sensationally beat Bayern.
Friedl (contract with Werder until 2026) feels right at home in Bremen, his girlfriend Ana is expecting a child together in the near future. And yet there is something the captain would drop everything for.

Friedl honestly: “I would also go somewhere where I don’t feel so comfortable if a title is at stake there. A lot of footballers want to play for a title in their career – me too. It’s only been 15 years as a professional footballer, and I would accept a lot for that.”

It is not expected that he will win the title with Werder. There is no deadline for a change for Friedl, who was about to move to Union Berlin after relegation in 2021.
“I’m at a very good age, the next three or four years are the best. I didn’t set a time window for myself. When the transfer windows are open you can see what happens. If nothing happens, I would be happy to be here and would also like to win something with Werder,” says Friedl, who refrains from vowing loyalty. “If you say: I’ll stay 100 percent – and something happens, you’re the idiot in the end.
