Marco Formentini, mayor of Milan from 1993 to ’97, died at the age of 90. Born in 1930, was an exponent of the Socialist party but became known in the 1990s when he approached and then joined the North league. Formentini had been married to Augusta Gariboldi, the first first sciura from Milan, who died in 2012: a united couple who had three children. After Palazzo Marino
In 1997, the Northern League ran alone and Formentini did not even get to the ballot: Gabriele Albertini (Forza Italia) sat in the mayor’s chair, who in the second round prevailed over the exponent of the Ulivo Aldo Fumagalli.
After his experience as mayor, Formentini was no longer able to carve out a leading role in Italian politics. It still was MEP from the Northern League but just re-elected to the Strasbourg parliament in 1999 (he had already been elected in ’94) he left the party. Later he joined the Democrats.
