Marco Chiesa (SVP) missed a plane to New York

SVP party president Marco Chiesa missed his flight to New York. He should have taken a tour of the UN headquarters.

the essentials in brief

  • A delegation from the Swiss parliament is currently visiting the USA.
  • A visit to the UN Security Council in New York is planned.
  • Marco Chiesa should have been there too, but he missed his plane at the airport.

A delegation from the Swiss parliament is visiting the USA this week. One of the items on the program is a visit to the UN headquarters. The delegation should get an impression of how the UN Security Council works. Marco Chiesa, party leader of the SVP, should have been part of the leadership.

But he missed the plane to New York at the airport, write the Tamedia newspapers. Even though he checked in online and had all the necessary documents with him. However, it appeared only an hour before departure, which was probably too short for the American airline. Chiesa was no longer allowed on board.

Possible to sit on the Security Council

The reason for the visit is the discussion about Switzerland’s possible seat on the UN Security Council. The next election will take place next June, and Switzerland’s admission to the committee is almost certain.

But now the SVP is again opposing the candidacy and calling for it to be withdrawn. This even with a corresponding application at the beginning of the week, submitted to the Foreign Affairs Commission. The geopolitical situation has changed and there is a great need for a really neutral negotiating partner, says applicant Franz Grüter. From the point of view of neutrality politics, taking a seat was a “fall from grace”.

No decision, no trip

Chiesa will not travel to New York because he does not want to travel to the States for just one day. In addition, it is only an information trip. Nothing is decided there.
