Marco Borsato (54) showed his emotional side several times tonight in the Belgian program ‘Het Huis’. The singer spoke candidly about his childhood, his marriage to Leontine Borsato and the stroke he suffered in 2016 on the anniversary of his father’s death.
“In the end you are a product of your parents and your environment”

Marco tells that his father has actually been little in his life. After he and Mary Borsato, Marco’s mother, broke up, he left for Italy. “The longer he’s dead, the more I miss him. While he’s never really been there.” Mary was all alone in the Netherlands, but did her utmost to ensure that her children kept in touch with their father. “My mother saved up the hard-earned money so that we could go to him during the holidays. I saw him six weeks a year. My mother always kept a big picture of him. If he forgot my birthday, she bought in his place presents for me.”

Marco says that especially after the breakup with Leontine, he really felt the need to talk to his father, who had already died by then. “I did that in quiet moments. The funny thing is, I have the feeling that he is listening. When the love of your life leaves you, the mother of your children, I was really numb. Still, Marco is somehow happy that it turned out this way, because he says he learned a lot from it. “Now life is different. I have now learned why I do certain things. After all, you are a product of your parents and your environment.”

Remarkably, Marco suffered a stroke in 2016, on the anniversary of his father’s death. “I was on my way to a concert and suddenly saw the image vibrate. I stopped at a station and took a Mars and then I noticed that it would not go away. I then got out of the car and went to look in the window of the gas station or my face was slumped which it wasn’t but it didn’t feel right so i drove straight to the hospital where i was in a CT scan within a few minutes and it turned out it was a tia i’m there stayed for a week and made a full recovery.”

Marco also looks back on his divorce from Leontine and the reconciliation attempt that brought them back together. The singer wrote her a letter in which he took full responsibility for what he had done. “I wrote it for Christmas. I asked my son if he wanted to put it on her bed. When she had read it it was a very beautiful moment, I find that very hopeful.”
He is not afraid that he will ever make a mistake again. “Every day I choose what I do and don’t do. And if I think, this no longer fits with who I want to be, I step on the brakes.”
