The fact that no more concerts will be held in De Kuip in Rotterdam from 2026 is no relief for the residents of the nearby Sportdorp area. Some saw the benefits of the ‘free’ concerts: “You don’t need a ticket if you live here,” said one resident. Rijnmond.
This week it was announced that the town wants to build homes near De Kuip and that will be much easier if noise from concerts does not have to be taken into account. Feijenoord Stadium receives compensation from the city a million dollar amount.
De Kuip’s work was also a pop temple in the 1970s. The biggest stars in the world played there, from Bruce Springsteen to Madonna.
A local resident who has looked out over the stadium for years likes being able to listen to the performances. “You used to have great bands like Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones. We even had the Los Vast Kuipspektakel, but that was a long time ago. You can experience a few things here. Rammstein has also been, well, you could hear it very well with us here. In that respect, we’re fine here.”
Parking problem
But there are also advantages to missing the concerts, for example if the music is not to your taste. “The Dutch concerts were smaller. I don’t miss anything about that,” he says. He also won’t miss the parking hassle. “The concerts are usually during the week, so you come home from work and you have to look for a seat.”
According to the local resident, the field in the stadium is also better off. “After a concert like this, things didn’t look as good as they are now.
Moving forward in the garden
Another local resident thinks it’s a shame the concerts are disappearing. “It doesn’t bother me that much, and I like it when I sit in the garden. It depends on what kind of music it is, but then you move a little.”
Another resident of Sportdorp says that the concerts create an atmosphere in the community. “I heard Rammstein, that was the last one there. I think I heard the Rolling Stones once, but that was a long time ago. I think they can come back, but what can you do about it?”
