How did you come up with the idea to play in such an unusual place? Mārcis says that this time the initiative for this event came from the Cēsi Correctional Institution: “The staff approached me as a practicing guitarist and guitar teacher with the aim of talking to the prisoners about guitar playing and the specifics of solo concerts, as well as about the backstage of the musician’s profession in general, in the form of a lecture. A very welcome and supportable initiative, in my opinion.”

When asked about his own emotions when playing for young people, Māris states in his characteristic manner that every place and time of performance is unique, especially when we talk about solo concerts:

“This time was certainly no exception, because in addition to the usual challenges, there was also a little uncertainty as to whether what I told and played would be interesting and exciting for everyone (there were also those prisoners who did not play the guitar). I tried to abstract from the circumstances, give my best and talk like like with like.”

The artist was surprised by the respect and attention with which the young people caught every word and note. Questions were also asked both about specific guitar playing techniques and about the invisible part of the iceberg of the musician’s profession. 2/3 of the prisoners practice playing the guitar on a daily basis – it is said to have made the process easier.

Marci was most moved by a prisoner who came up after the performance and admitted that he got goosebumps during one piece. This composition was created by Māračs Auziņš himself – “The theme of young lovers”.

When asked why it is important to “give” music to people who are in such places, the guitarist says: “If even one sentence from what I told about the profession of a musician will “stick” to one of the young people and help them start on a new path (regardless of the chosen profession), in which there is no crime, then my trip is worth it! Everyone can make mistakes and everyone deserves a second chance.”

A couple of days after visiting Cēsis, a well-known theater director in Latvia, who works with these young people in Cēsis, wrote to him on a daily basis. The young people were said to be excited about this visit, and one of the prisoners was said to have practiced playing the guitar for several hours in the following days. Marci is very happy about it, and it is the best assessment! He says a lot of thanks to the young people for listening and to the management of the prison for the initiative and interest in the young people and their lives and interests.

In conclusion, Marcis adds that his goal in this event was certainly not publicity, but the desire to do something good. He agreed to the conversation with LA.LV only to inspire other artists and everyone to do good works.
