The Redemptorist of San Pedro de Trones, Marciano Vidal García, delivered this week the first 11 volumes of his most extensive work, History of Moral Theology, to the Diocesan Archive of Astorga. The Bercian Vidal, who has written more than fifty books and nearly four hundred articles in magazines specialized in morality, expands his presence in the bibliographic collections of the Archive directed by Miguel Ángel González.
The historical chronicle of Moral Theology ranges from the biblical roots and the Greco-Roman world to the present day, with Pope Francis. In total there will be 13 books, with eleven thousand pages grouped in 6 volumes, to tell the most complete history of Morals published to date, written by this moralist, Marciano Vidal, who has been a professor at the Madrid University of Comillas and at the Alphonsian Academy of Rome, in addition to directing the Higher Institute of Moral Sciences, among other work dedications.
This historical chronicle, which has been published by the Perpetuo Socorro publishing house of Madrid, belonging to the Spanish Redemptorists, is awaiting the publication of the I volume – which will be the last due to the author’s strategy to maintain the interest of readers – and the VI that closes the story, already delivered for printing.
The largest volume is V, with 7 books, which is dedicated to analyzing the period from the Council of Trent until these two decades of the 21st century, with special dedication to the notable figure of Alfonso de Ligorio and two other books with the gazetteer of names and works of the last centuries.
In addition to these editions, Vidal also delivered to the Archive—continuing with the objective of his direction of having books by the majority of authors of the diocese— an Encyclopedic Dictionary of Moral Theology, in which 58 specialists collaborate, Vidal among them, and Christian ethics today. Horizons of meaning – co-directed by another diocesan Redemptorist, Vicente García (Benamarias) -, which provides the biography of the Bercian writer and an extensive bibliography up to 2003, since the book was born as a tribute to Vidal on his 65th birthday. 53 professors and experts in Moral Theology, including several women, contributed articles to a 1,027-page book.
Marciano Vidal began to be popular among Spanish moral theologians after publishing, in 1974, Moral de Attitudes (Fundamental Morals), which became a manual for Spanish seminaries for the following 25 years.
