In a show of unity and determination, the National Movement of Residents of Chile, together with other organizations of homeless residents, led a massive march in protest against the recently approved “Anti-Usurpation Law” or “Anti-Tomas Law.” The demonstration became an urgent call to the authorities to address the housing crisis in the country effectively and fairly. Through this mobilization, the movement emphasized six crucial demands to achieve a sustainable and equitable solution to this pressing challenge.
1. No to the Anti-Usurpation Law: Guaranteeing Solutions to the Housing Crisis The National Movement of Residents of Chile vehemently rejects the so-called “Anti-Tomas Law”. Instead of addressing the housing crisis, he believes that this legislation can lead to dangerous consequences and the “law of the jungle.” Instead, it advocates for a comprehensive solution that involves social movements and the State in the search for ways to solve the lack of housing that affects thousands of families. The president is urged to use his veto power to stop this law and stop any eviction orders immediately.
2. Fair Tax Reform: Financing for Social Demands The movement proposes a fair tax reform that increases collection and allows the financing of social demands, including education, health and housing. It is proposed to tax large profits and combat tax evasion and avoidance to ensure that the resources are used for the benefit of society as a whole.
3. Recovery of Strategic Land: Construction of Social Housing The demand to make available land in the hands of the Armed Forces and not used for the construction of social housing projects is crucial. Citizen participation in the recovery of these lands is essential, and the movement seeks to join the negotiation tables with the Armed Forces to request land for decent housing.
4. Control of Increases and Living Wages The National Movement of Residents of Chile demands to put a stop to indiscriminate increases and freeze the prices of the basic family basket. In addition, an increase in the minimum wage is requested to improve the purchasing power of workers, protecting them from monopolistic policies and speculation.
5. Transparency and Oversight of Social Financing It seeks to protect the integrity of the social financing system through high state supervision and transparency measures. Corruption in all its forms must be punished in an exemplary manner to ensure that the resources allocated to social programs truly benefit the population.
6. Comprehensive Housing Emergency Plan The movement calls for accelerating the implementation of the Housing Emergency Plan and coordinating all the actors involved in the comprehensive concept of the City. This implies neighborhood projects equipped with housing, transportation, health, education, security, commerce, and respect for the environment. The consolidation of working groups with regional governments and broad popular participation in the development of public policies are required.
The National Movement of Residents of Chile reaffirms its commitment to active participation and the defense of the rights of the population. Through mobilization and political action, they seek to bring the voice of the inhabitants of Chile to all levels of debate and negotiation, in the constant search for a dignified and just life for all.
