Colombian trade unions will march across the country on Thursday in support of Gustavo Petro’s government and against right-wing efforts to remove him from power.
According to the president of the General Confederation of Labor, Percy Oyola, all the conditions have been created for the mobilizations in support of the program promoted by the current Government.
“In the case of Bogotá, we are calling for 11 a.m. demonstrations in Plaza de Bolívar and, at a national level, we are organizing rallies with the purpose of confronting the coup that is planned against the President of the Republic,” he told the media.
The union leader also took advantage of the opportunity to criticize the actions of the National Electoral Council, which, he explained, has no jurisdictional powers and dares to initiate an investigation and promote sanctions against the President of the Republic.
He added that this is a way of creating conditions for a coup, as was the atmosphere created around the truckers’ strike that occurred at the beginning of this month, as well as the rest of the expressions that originate with the purpose of removing the president and his proposals.
He described this situation as a threat to democracy that must be confronted with social and popular mobilization.
The president of the Central Unitary Workers’ Union, Fabio Arias, said that the protests are also intended to send a message to the Constitutional Court to dismiss a lawsuit seeking to annul the Pension Law, recently sanctioned by the president.
In order to contribute to the goal of safeguarding the law, members of the Historic Pact political coalition asked the elderly and all citizens to join the events that will take place during this day.
The Colombian Federation of Education Workers also called on its members on social media to mobilize to defend democracy, social reforms, peace and unity.
