Mexico City. When announcing the deadline established to eliminate the sale of ultra-processed products in public schools, the Secretary of Public Education, Mario Delgado, stated that starting in March these will be prevented from continuing to be sold in schools. He announced an information campaign for agents involved , among whom are school directors, parents, teachers, among others.
During the presidential morning conference, he recalled that on September 30, the SEP and the Ministry of Health issued public guidelines in the Official Gazette of the Federation to prohibit these products due to their unfavorable impact on health, as they cause childhood obesity. He indicated that in that document a period of 180 days was established for it to be fully valid.
Delgado reported that among the actions to implement this agreement, a diploma will be given to all teachers on the foods that can be sold in schools and those that must be eliminated.
He stated that they will seek to coordinate with parents of the ‘The School is Ours’ program so that they allocate resources from the support they receive at each campus and install water fountains, all with the aim of eliminating the sale of soft drinks and sweetened drinks.
In addition, we will seek to train school cooperatives on how to implement this change in products on campus, directing them to sell healthy foods, prioritizing fruits and vegetables.
The head of the SEP explained that the information campaign will be based on the guides for good eating and for healthy and economical eating, which have been outlined by the Ministry of Health.
