The rankings of the hundred most read books? Increasingly female driven. According to data released by the AIE, the Italian Publishers Association, in 2023, 48 out of 100 titles written by women ended up in the list of most purchased. Almost half. Thirty-four authors who, together, sold 4 million copies with a turnover of 61.7 million euros. A growing presence, that of female writers in the rankings: compared to 2022: the increase is +7.2% in the number of copies and +3.9% in value. There were 31 female writers in the 2022 top 100 with 44 titles on the list. The data were published in the Giornale della Libreria, the online daily newspaper of the Italian Publishers Association.
But which are the books and which authors have conquered the publishing market?
From “La portaletterte” by Francesca Giannone (North), the best-selling book of last year, to Tre ciotole (Mondadori) by Michela Murgia, Sardinian writer who passed away last August. And again “Come d’aria” by There’s D’Adamo (Elliot) who won the Strega Prize posthumously in 2023.
The group of authors loved by Gen Z is large: from Tillie Cole with his tear-jerking romance “Give me a thousand kisses” (Always Publishing) to “Two Hearts for Rent” by Felicia Kingsley (Newton Compton), the writer who, overall, including male authors, sold the most copies in 2023. And again Erin Doom, author of “Manufacturer of tears” (Magazzini Salani): the writer revealed her face to Fabio Fazio last May. We thus discovered that her name is Matilde: to give a sense of the importance of this revolution, this year she will lead the new romance section of the first Annalena Benini Book Fair.

According to AIE data, over the space of two years, not only has the number of female authors present in the fiction rankings (Italian and foreign) increased, but above all that of Italian authors, who grow from 2pm in 2022 to 9pm in 2023, with 18 new positions gained. This is also March 8th.
