IT HAPPENED ON… March 5th
1969 : Chicago Black Hawks Bobby Hull becomes first player to score 50 goals in a career four-time NHL season when he scores two goals in a 4-4 draw against the New York Rangers at Chicago Stadium.

Hull scores his 49th goal late in the first period and manages his 50th at 1:43 of the third, beating Ed Giacomin. Chico Maki and André Boudrias get assists on every goal. Hull ends the season with 58 goals, an NHL record.

Hull’s four 50-goal seasons are two more than any other player in NHL history combined. The only other 50-goal seasons belong to Maurice Richard (1944-45) and Bernard Geoffrion (1960-61).
This is another important achievement Hull achieved against the Rangers. Gump Worsley was the victim when Hull first hit the 50-goal mark on March 25, 1962 and Cesare Maniago gave him his 51st goal on March 12, 1966.

1969 : Phil Esposito gets an assist on each of the Boston Bruins’ goals in a 2-2 draw against the Detroit Red Wings at Boston Garden. It’s Esposito’s 62nd and 63rd assists of the season, setting a new NHL record.
1972 : Brad Park becomes the third defenseman in NHL history to score 20 goals in a season, when he foils Dunc Wilson in the third period of the Rangers 6-1 win over the Vancouver Canucks at Madison Square Garden. Park joins Flash Hollett (1943-44) and Bobby Orr, the latter having achieved the feat in 1971-72 for the fourth time in a streak of seven consecutive seasons in which he has achieved it.
1977 : Marcel Dionne hits the target in his Los Angeles Kings’ 3-3 draw against the Pittsburgh Penguins at the Forum in Inglewood, Calif., To become the first player in Kings history to score 100 points in a season. Dionne, who amassed 121 points with the Detroit Red Wings in 1974-75, also became the first player in NHL history to collect 100 points with two different teams.
Exactly eight years later, Dionne collects an assist in the Kings’ 6-0 win over Pittsburgh to become the first player in history to reach the 100-point plateau in an eight-career season.
1991 : Wayne Gretzky becomes the first player in NHL history to record 1,400 career assists, when he sets up all of the Kings’ goals in a 3-3 draw against the Washington Capitals in Landover, Md. He made his 1,400th pass when Tony Granato completed his power play at 13:11 of the first period, giving the Kings a 2-0 lead. Gretzky also picked up an assist on Rod Buskas’ goal in the first period and Tomas Sandstrom’s goal in the second.
1992 : Mats Sundin scores five goals and two assists to lead the Quebec Nordiques to a 10-4 victory over the Hartford Whalers at the Civic Center. The victory ends a streak of 33 consecutive games without a win abroad (0-25, eight draws) since the start of the season. Owen Nolan scores one goal and prepares five more.
2000 : Steve Yzerman becomes the all-time leader in assists among players who have spent their entire careers with one team. His 36th assist of the season came in the Red Wings’ 5-3 win over the Dallas Stars. It’s the 927th pass of his career, one more than Stan Mikita of the Blackhawks.
2016 : The Anaheim Ducks defeat the Los Angeles Kings 3-2 at Staples Center for their 11th consecutive win, a team record. The Ducks are 18-1-1 in a 20-game streak in which they capture the top of the Pacific Division, less than two months after falling 16 points behind the Kings. Bruce Boudreau of the Ducks becomes the fastest coach to record 400 NHL wins (400-186-77).
2019 : Barry Trotz becomes the fourth coach in NHL history to record 800 regular season wins, as the New York Islanders defeat the Ottawa Senators 5-4 in a shootout at the Nassau Coliseum. Trotz joins Scotty Bowman, Joel Quenneville and Ken Hitchcock as the only coaches with 800 wins.
That same night, Sidney Crosby became the 48th player in NHL history to score 1,200 points, when he scored one goal and added two assists in the Penguins’ 3-2 overtime win over the Florida Panthers at PPG. Paints Arena. Crosby is the 11th fastest player to reach the plateau, collecting his 1,200th point in his 927th NHL game.
2020 : Mika Zibanejad crowned a historic performance by scoring his fifth goal of the game in the 33rd second of overtime, giving the Rangers a 6-5 victory over the Washington Capitals at Madison Square Garden. Zibanejad joins Don Murdoch and Mark Pavelich as the only players in Rangers history to score five times in a game. He also joins Sergei Fedorov as the only players in NHL history to score their fifth goal of an overtime game.
