March 12: Hull breaks NHL record with his 51st goal

IT HAPPENED ON… March 12

1966 : Bobby Hull passed Maurice Richard and Bernard Geoffrion for the most goals in a season, when he scored his 51st goal in the third period of the Chicago Black Hawks’ 4-2 win over the New York Rangers at Chicago Stadium.

The Rangers take a 2-0 lead after 40 minutes. Hull then prepares the goal of Chico Maki which makes 2-1 and ends a scoreless streak that lasted more than 11 periods for Chicago. As Rangers defenseman Harry Howell sits in the penalty box, Hull breaks the record with a powerful slap shot that eludes goaltender Cesare Maniago for a power play goal at 5:34.

1980 : Gordie Howe’s last visit to Detroit as a player turns out to be an unforgettable evening. Hitchcock’s 700th victory comes exactly 15 years after he scored his 200th NHL victory when the Dallas Stars beat the Blues 4-2.

2018 : Alex Ovechkin, of the Washington Capitals, scores two goals in a 3-2 overtime win over the Winnipeg Jets to become the 20th player in NHL history to reach the 600-goal plateau. He is the fourth to achieve the feat in less than 1,000 games (990), joining Wayne Gretzky (718), Mario Lemieux (719) and Brett Hull (900).

That same evening, Marc-André Fleury of the Vegas Golden Knights became the 13th goalie in NHL history to record 400 victories. Fleury made 38 saves and Ryan Carpenter scores the deciding goal with 2:40 left in the third period to give the Golden Knights a 3-2 victory over the Flyers at Wells Fargo Center.

2019 : The top two picks in the 2004 NHL Draft each hit a big plateau in the third period, as the Pittsburgh Penguins defeat the Capitals 5-3 at PPG Paints Arena. Evgeni Malkin, of the Penguins, collected his second assist of the game on a power play goal of Phil Kessel at 11:56 for his 1,000th point in the NHL. At 2:02 pm, Ovechkin prepared for the power play goal of John Carlson for his 1200th career point. Ovechkin (first overall) and Malkin (second) become the fourth duo of players selected with the top two picks in an NHL Draft to each reach the 1,000 point mark.
