Like the sword of Damocles that always hangs below our heads, the reaper has struck again within the Gabonese political community, this time with the death of Marcel Doupamby Matoka. The former vice president for the Fougamou association and former Minister of Finance died on Saturday at El Rapha, a modern polyclinic in Libreville.
Marcel Doupamby Matoka from Ngounié in South West Gabon was originally born on October 14, 1942 in Moulandou-Fouala. Trained in banking, he began a brilliant career within Crédit Lyonnais in France before continuing in Gabon at the Union Gabonaise des Banques (UGB) where he achieved a meteoric rise. First as deputy general manager, then as general manager, president and general manager, then as chairman of the Board of Directors.
In the political world, he has had an equally distinguished career, amassing the most prominent positions in his country’s executive apparatus. This is how he himself was the Minister of Labor and Employment, Finance, Budget and Economy and Trade.
Wherever he went, he left an indelible mark and left a mark of vitality and development.
In the Fougamou constituency where he was the first elected mayor, his memory will still be engraved in marble after the impetus he gave to local development punctuated by basic social infrastructures such as housing hotel, market, schools and much more.
It is a great loss for the Gabonese political scene in general which has lost a statesman, a visionary and the residents of Fougamou in particular where he had to be the deputy leader from 1996 until his retirement political in March 2018.
His last appearances date back two months after the death of his wife and at the opening ceremony of the Inclusive National Dialogue on April 2 at the Palais des sports in Petit Paris where he was seen with General Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, proof of his endless passion. till the last breath of his life for his country.
