Marc Noppen sees opportunities in new measures: “Accelerating the vaccination program” | Brussels

ThrowNow that he sees the pressure in his hospital increasing considerably, the extra package of corona measures does not come a day too soon for UZ Brussel CEO Marc Noppen. The hospital director responds with relief to the entanglements. He calls the decision “positive and courageous”.

For Noppen, it is now important to make people comply with the measures and, above all, to offer perspective with the acceleration of the vaccination program.

Of the measures announced by Prime Minister Alexander De Croo, the CEO of UZ Brussel mainly remembers three things. One: better control of the measures, “because I think people have let the reins loosen firmly in the last few weeks,” says Noppen. Two: the new limitation on the number of contacts between, and three: working on a more efficient vaccination campaign.

“If, overall, things become calmer in society, work can be done on accelerating the vaccination program. That is also a positive thing that offers more perspective ”, says Noppen.

“New Beast”

The British variant has almost completely supplanted the original variant in the test results of UZ Brussel. The higher contagiousness is an additional challenge. “We may not have seen the speed of population spread coming. It is a new animal with a new clinical picture ”, says Noppen.

In the past 24 hours, eight new corona cases were admitted at UZ Brussel. A total of 48 covid patients are now being cared for, 15 of which are in intensive care. “We expect the figures to rise in the next ten days and two weeks. We hope that we can make use of the relative peace during the Easter holidays. In this way we can also continue to provide non-covid care ”, Noppen concludes.
