Marc Marquez’s Future with Honda: The Latest Updates and Speculations

Jakarta

Honda is still opening up opportunities to continue its partnership with Marc Marquez. Even so, the decision remains in the hands of ‘The Baby Aliens’.

Honda is in a critical period in the last season in MotoGP. In the 2023 season it was even worse, the racers had difficulty riding the Honda RC213V. In fact, three of the four riders are currently suffering from injuries. One of its flagship racers, Marc Marquez, is no exception.

Marquez said Honda motorbikes were not competitive. Let alone fighting in front, being able to finish the race alone is good. Marquez himself has never touched the finish line in the main race which is held every Sunday. He played the main race of the season ending in the gravel. The rest, Marquez did not participate in the race due to injury.

As a result, the Repsol Honda rider is now in 19th place in the standings. From a total of 16 races held this season, Marquez has only collected 15 points. While the leader of the standings has pocketed 194 points.

Reflecting on this, it seems difficult for the 30-year-old racer to compete for the MotoGP title in 2023. From there, rumors emerged that Marc Marquez would leave Honda. Related to this, Marc Marquez is still reluctant to comment. What is clear is that he is only focused on physical recovery so he can race again. It is also known that the brother of Alex Marquez is still under contract with (HRC) Honda Racing Corporation until 2024.

On the other hand, Honda still believes the bike will be competitive again. HRC President Koji Watanabe did not deny that he was currently trying to repair the motorbike as soon as possible.

“We are currently fighting in MotoGP. We are working on where the four-wheel and two-wheel divisions collaborate on development. We will improve the chassis, aerodynamics and also the engine. I’m not saying four-wheel is better, but we work together and can take perspective different. We want to catch up with rivals as soon as possible,” Watanabe was quoted as saying by Motosan.

Dorna itself is now planning to revise the concession rules in MotoGP. With this, it is hoped that Honda and also Yamaha, which have recently been in a slump, will be able to return to full swing. But it all takes time. Watanabe said that changes to the Honda motorbike might only be seen next season.

As for the matter of Marquez’s whereabouts, he hopes that he can continue to work together.

“Of course he’s one we want to keep. But the decision is in his hands, if he decides to leave, I won’t hold him back. I think we have to show him ‘something’ so he can stay. Not the way Honda asks him to stay by begging ‘Please hold on’,” said Watanabe.
