Marc Márquez (Honda): «I heard about Ducati»

It was no surprise that Marc Márquez and Honda would continue to work together after the 2020 season. After all, the successful combination has conquered six titles, 56 wins, 95 podiums and 62 pole positions in seven joint MotoGP years. However, the fact that the contract was extended by four years up to and including 2024 caused some frowns. How did that happen?

«Honda had the first idea. I honestly hadn’t thought of it, ”the Spaniard revealed to the Italian colleague from“ Sky Sport ”. «Then we started talking about it. At first I thought: ‘Why not, let’s just try to talk about it.’ We then saw that it was a win-win project. It was interesting for them to continue what we did in those years, that is to fight for the World Cup – and for me as well. I feel good with the motorcycle, no factory or team could offer me more in what was important to me, namely the sporting project. That is why – for the first time in history – we have agreed on a project over four years. »

“After four years we will see whether it was the right decision for them and for me,” added the six-time MotoGP world champion with a smile.

Is there still a chance that Marc Márquez will go for the title on another motorcycle? «I am 27 years old and have a contract for another four years. You never know, »replied the Repsol Honda star. «I heard that people say that I have to win on another motorcycle. But I made my decision with my heart. Honda gave me the chance to get out of Moto2 and win. »

This is another reason why other manufacturers had no chance. “I heard from Ducati that they asked for information, but the Honda project was the best from a sporting point of view,” said Marc Márquez. But he still left a back door open: “At the moment I’m saying no, but you never know in the future …”
