In the run-up to the Catholic Day in Stuttgart, which begins today, the General Secretary of the Central Committee of German Catholics (ZdK), Marc Frings, called for the reforms formulated in the so-called synodal path to be tackled swiftly in the Catholic Church. At phoenix, Frings said: “Many say it may be the last chance for the Catholic Church to come back to the present. I think we should now boldly use this opportunity again, often this chance doesn’t exist, but of course I know even if the skepticism.” In explanation, Frings added: “50 years ago there were synods in West and East Germany that disagreed with similar results, some of these results are still waiting to be implemented today, the Catholic Church, the official church can be sure of that today can’t afford anymore.” The Catholics should have the “clear impression” that “the church has understood that it is being implemented, because only then will people feel comfortable,” said the Secretary General of the ZdK. It is about “that we enable democratization, that many people feel affected, that the question of women is answered differently, that sexual morality is reconsidered, that the priestly image is properly illuminated again,” said Frings.
The synodal path is a discussion format for a structured debate within the Catholic Church in Germany about the processing of the abuse scandal, its systemic causes and the resulting necessary reforms. It is supported by the Central Committee of Catholics and the German Bishops’ Conference.
