Marc Brys named Cameroon coach by the Minister of Sports, the Federation surprised

The Cameroonian football federation reacted with astonishment on Wednesday to the appointment of Marc Brys as national coach. The Cameroonian Ministry of Sports announced on television news that the 61-year-old from Antwerp, former coach of Oud-Heverlee Louvain, was the successor to Rigobert Song. The latter’s contract expired in February and was not renewed after a disappointing African Cup of Nations.

In a press release published on Wednesday, the federation expressed its “great astonishment” faced with this procedure after the announcement of Brys taking office. There had apparently been no prior agreement on the occupation of the position. During the African Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast , Song had not achieved the objective he had set for himself, namely the semi-finals. Cameroon had been eliminated in the round of 16 by Nigeria.

Marc Brys is the third Belgian coach named Cameroon coach, after Henri Depireux (1996-1997) and Hugo Broos (2016-2017). He led the Indomitable Lions to victory during CAN 2017.
