Big award for Marc-Andre ter Stegen. The goalkeeper receives the “Trofeo Alfredo Di Stefano” from the Spanish sports newspaper Marca. The FC Barcelona goalkeeper created a novelty.

Since 2008, what is probably the best-known Spanish sports media has been honoring the most important players of the past season with a series of awards. Among other things, with the Di Stefano Trophy, which is presented to the MVP of La Liga.

First goalkeeper to win MVP honors

On Friday, Ter Stegen accepted the award, becoming the first goalkeeper to be named best player of the season. Previous winners of the trophy are Lionel Messi (7 awards and record holder), Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, Luis Suárez and Real legend, Raúl.

There was also the Zamora Trophy, which is intended to honor the best goalkeeper of the season. “A proud moment. (…). The awards are the result of our great teamwork. With the championship we have achieved an even greater achievement. I would like to thank my teammate, everyone at the club, our fantastic fans and of course my family.” said the award winner on X.

Helpful for the national team?

Another award for the 31-year-old – and at the same time a statement for the national team? After Manuel Neuer’s return to action, ter Stegen’s position as number one has once again become unstable, especially with a view to the upcoming European Championships.

It currently seems completely unclear who will be between the posts at the German national team’s home tournament. The competition is considered open. Good performances in the club and the associated awards can serve as a statement for Ter Stegen to underline his current position as the starting goalkeeper.
