Marburg virus vaccine trials to be conducted by WHO in Tanzania and Guinea.

WHO is preparing to launch trials of vaccines and treatments against the Marburg virus in Equatorial Guinea and Tanzania. This haemorrhagic fever has already caused 9 and 5 deaths respectively in these two countries.

Equatorial Guinea and Tanzania have recently reported cases of Marburg virus. In Equatorial Guinea, thirteen cases have been reported, including nine deaths in three provinces. According to’OMS, the three provinces are 150 kilometers apart, suggesting more widespread transmission of the virus. In Tanzania, authorities have confirmed eight cases, including five deaths in the Kagera region in the northwest of the country.

WHO ready to support vaccine trials

To stop the spread of the disease, the WHO wants to start trials of vaccines and treatments in these two countries. “A WHO committee has now reviewed the evidence for four vaccines. Trial protocols are finalized and our partners are ready to support the trials”said Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director General of the WHO.

Trials will be conducted in collaboration with governments

The organization plans to work with the governments of both countries to roll out the trials. The aim is to help prevent cases and deaths in the current situation and in future outbreaks.

Last week, Tanzania declared its first outbreak of Marburg virus disease. In addition to the eight confirmed cases, 161 contacts have been identified and are being followed up, according to the WHO.
