Marathon World Record Holder Kelvin Kiptam Killed in Tragic Car Accident in Kenya

Kenyan athlete Kelvin Kiptam, the current marathon world record holder, has died in a car accident. The accident happened on Sunday night in Eldoret, Kenya’s fifth largest city. The coach also died in the accident.

The incident happened around 11 pm local time. Kelvin and coach Gervais Hakisimana were on their way to the training ground in Eldoret when the accident happened. The car lost control and skidded off the road and hit a big tree. The Kenyan police said that 24-year-old Kelvin was driving the vehicle.

The Kenyan athlete and coach died on the spot. Elgeo Marakwet County Police Commander Peter Mulinge said another person in the car was seriously injured. The 24-year-old Kiptam is the first athlete in history to complete the marathon in under two hours and one second. Last October, he made history by finishing in 2 hours 35 seconds at the Chicago Marathon.

Kiptam was on pace to finish under two hours at the Rotterdam Marathon. Kiptom will compete in the first marathon of his career in 2022. Hakisimana, 36, is a former professional athlete from Rwanda who has competed in events ranging from 5,000 meters to half marathons.
