Marathon, New York: Kamworor and Jepkosgei win the New York Marathon

The pass of two for the Kenyan. This Sunday, Geoffrey Kamworor, after 2017, won the New York Marathon, after accelerating in the last five kilometers, ahead of his compatriot Albert Korir. Kamworor won in 2h 08:13 in the final at Central Park. He could never be caught by Korir (2:08:36) nor by the Ethiopian Girma Bekele Gebre (2:08:38). The other Ethiopian, great organizer of the race, Tamirat Tola, finished in fourth place. The defending champion, Lelisa Desisa retired after the 13th kilometer. A regular on the podiums in New York, where in addition to his two successes, he has to his list a second place in 2015 and a third last year, the 26-year-old runner remained on a superb performance at the Copenhagen half-marathon in September where he had signed the new world record in 58 min 1 sec 15/100.

Among the women, the Kenyan Joyciline Jepkosgei dethroned the queen of the event, her compatriot Mary Keitany, four-time winner of the event, who finished 2nd. Jepkosgei won in 2h 22 min 38 sec, ahead of Keitany, who had triumphed over Central Park in 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2018, and the Ethiopian Ruti Aga. This trio broke away shortly before halfway through the race. A specialist in shorter distances, 10, 15, 20 km for which she holds the world records, Jepkosgei, 25, was running her first marathon. It was at the 37th km that she distanced herself from Keitany, who was not at her best as she had previously been seen vomiting. In the last three kilometers, the hardest especially for a non-marathoner, Jepkosgei often winced to keep up the effort, turning around to see if her rival caught up with her. But she did impose herself, in addition by touching the record of the event set by Margaret Okayo in 2003 in 2h 22 min 31 sec.
