The bodies of eleven mountain climbers have been found on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. They died after an eruption of the Marapi volcano. Three people have been found alive. Twelve others are still missing, but the search has been temporarily halted due to a smaller new eruption.

Earlier in the day it became clear that there were 75 mountain climbers in the Marapi area at the time of the eruption. 49 of them were quickly evacuated. Many have suffered burns and are being treated for them.

The almost 2,900 meter high volcano in West Sumatra erupted yesterday and spewed ash up to 3 kilometers into the air. Authorities have instructed local residents to keep a distance of 3 kilometers from the volcano. The second highest safety alert is in effect.
