Maradona died of a heart attack on November 25, 2020 in a private residential complex north of Buenos Aires at the age of 60. A few weeks earlier he had undergone brain surgery. According to the investigators’ assessment, massive mistakes had been made in the home care of the 1986 world champion, who was in serious health condition.

The trial against eight doctors and nurses is scheduled to begin in March next year. The public prosecutor’s office accuses them of manslaughter. All defendants deny the allegations. If convicted, they face prison sentences of up to 25 years.

Maradona is considered one of the best footballers in history. The player from a humble background took part in four World Cups and scored 34 goals in 91 international matches. Together with the Brazilian Pelé, he was honored as “Footballer of the Century”. Off the field, he also repeatedly hit the headlines because of his drug use and his love affairs.
