Argentine football champion Diego Maradon was buried in a private funeral ceremony on Thursday near a cemetery on the outskirts of Buenos Aires, but a previous public farewell from a world – famous star interrupted prematurely as several kilometers of mourners turned into a crowd and clashed with police, the BBC reported.
The organizers estimated that about a million escorts could gather in the hall of the farewell presidential palace “Casa Rosada” in Buenos Aires. Initially, everything went according to plan, except for the small disturbances caused by a small group’s efforts to access the Maradona coffin without a queue. The emotional atmosphere was generally calm, with the applause both applauding and chanting the name of Maradona. Argentine President Alberto Fernandes also said goodbye to Maradona.
At lunch, the situation on the way to the farewell place became annoyed, with some present attending the presidential palace in the crowd instead of queuing. The most aggressive fans tried to break through the fence and threw various objects at the police officers. Law enforcement officers, in turn, responded with the use of tear gas and rubber bullets.
However, contrary to police demands, the rebel group managed to break into the farewell room and stopped visitors’ access due to incidents. The coffin was moved to other rooms and, despite the protests of the escorts, the farewell was not renewed. The Argentine government later announced that the farewell was stopped at the request of the Maradona family.
The funeral ceremony in the cemetery on Thursday was attended by only a dozen relatives and closest friends, while other companions of the last goodbye still house on the streets of the hearse on the route. Maradona was buried in a cemetery next to family members.
It has already been reported that Maradona, considered one of the most outstanding footballers in the world, on Wednesday, November 25, died of a heart attack at the age of 60.
