Maracaibo University Hospital treats 273 patients with COVID-19

The Zulia region has been the hardest hit by cases of coronavirus infections as a result of the focus generated by the binational trade route with Colombia. For this reason, the city of Maracaibo and the central helmet are in radical quarantine. Doctors claim that the virus strain that has spread in this area is more deadly.

The most important health center in Maracaibo, the University Hospital, currently houses 273 COVID-19 positive patients in its red zone. This area is restricted, only doctors and health personnel can enter with the necessary clothing to protect their health and provide treatments to patients who are fighting for their lives.

“It has behaved differently with respect to other strains that we have seen, it is causing multiple pulmonary complications. We are finding patients who die within 72 hours. In this strain, this type of organic response and complications are becoming more precocious, ”said the Chief of the Che Guevara Brigade, Arian Cuba.

While our colleague Yiseth Cabrera, carries out journalistic work in this health center, an elderly patient arrives who has tested positive for the rapid test. Immediately she is attended, passed to isolation to start the necessary treatment that is applied in the country for free.

The daughter of this patient warns that it is time to take care of herself and really abide by the measures, “my mother did not go out and look, you have to take care of yourself, it is not a game.”

Health authorities are expecting more cases and are working to increase care capacity. Hotels equipped as hospitals are one of the measures to care for asymptomatic patients and leave only the serious in sentinel centers.

“Conditions were created in conjunction with the hotel chamber. Mainly, we use motels because their physical configuration allows for better insulation, there is less interaction and fewer common spaces where people who are not yet confirmed with Covid-19 are. We also have separate hostels for people who are confirmed with PCR and are undergoing their treatment, ”reported the director of Social Development of the Mayor’s Office of Maracaibo, Selene Estrach.

The first experience in the country to convert a Comprehensive Diagnosis Center (CDI) into an Intensive Care Unit is located in the town of Corito, where CDI Marcial Hernández is ready to receive Covid-19 patients with complications.

Health authorities are working to create many more conditions to isolate, care for and recover each person infected with COVID-19.
