First marriage at 17
«I got married at 17 to the father of my son, but it didn’t end well, I was so young. Then I got married to Jerry Calà in Las Vegas, but it was not valid in Italy. Then no one ever asked me to marry him again, and by then I really didn’t think about it anymore. Instead, in 2006 we were in Dubai to spend New Year’s Eve. At midnight Nicola got down on one knee and asked me to marry him.” Today Mara Venier – who returns on Rai 1 on Sunday 17 September at 2.00 pm with the new edition Domenica In – is happy and in love alongside her husband Nicola Carraro, married in 2006. Over the years, her love life has often ended up in the spotlight . Born in Venice on 20 October 1950, she experienced her first great love at just 16 years old: «One day, in Piazza Ferretto in Mestre, I meet a boy as beautiful as the sun, and I fall madly in love with him: Francesco Ferracini – recalled the presenter in an interview with Corriere -. We had a fuitina. And three months later we got married.” Elisabetta was born on 3 October 1968: «I didn’t have the courage to tell my parents that I was expecting a baby, even though my mother understood. The priest, Don Gino Trevisan, was very against it: “Keep your hair, but don’t get married!”. The same evening as the wedding, the groom left for Rome: he dreamed of being an actor. And I stayed in the railway workers’ house, where Elisabetta was born.”
The second son Paolo
In 1971, accompanying her now ex-husband to the auditions for the film “Diary of an Italian” by Sergio Capogna, she was chosen as the female protagonist. On the set of the film she meets the actor Pier Paolo Capponi, with whom she begins a relationship. In 1975, from this love story, the second son of the future presenter of Domenica In was born: Paolo. «My relationship with him was not very peaceful in some moments of our life – Venier told Chi in 2019 -. The arrival of my grandson acted as a glue: it was a moment, a magic, we became one big family again.”
Marriage to Las Vegas
The presenter married Jerry Calà – she met during the filming of the film “I Go and Live Alone” – in 1984 in Las Vegas. «Life was always a game and it got me into all kinds of fun – Venier said a few years ago in an interview with Verissimo -. Let’s say he was very naughty. I’ll just tell you that on the day of our wedding party, while everyone was celebrating and Renato Zero was singing, he disappeared! I went to the bathrooms and pinched him with another one. You don’t know how many I gave to both him and her.” Although they broke up after a few years together, Jerry and Mara maintained an excellent relationship. «She is my greatest friend- Calà said to the Corriere in 2021-. With the affection that remains after love and with intelligence, we become friends. For us it was natural. Some people remain in the heart and the relationship transforms into something else equally beautiful and full of complicity.”
Twelve years with Renzo Arbore
On the occasion of the special episode of Domenica In aired in prime time in 2022 Mara Venier said: «If I am here today, on my 13th Domenica In, I owe it to him». That is, Renzo Arbore, her partner for twelve years until 1997. «I immediately thought that it was good for that program», he confirmed, who gave her only one piece of fundamental advice: «One day, while we were in the kitchen, he looked at me : I had jeans, a t-shirt, I was barefoot and with my hair tied up – Mara told the Corriere -. She told me: “You have to do Domenica In like this, showing yourself as you are in everyday life. If you can do it, it’s done.” «Renzo was very important for me, as I was for him – the presenter said years ago to Vanity Fair -. Together we experienced beautiful moments and tragic moments, such as the loss of our son in 1990, when I was five and a half months pregnant.”
Passion with Armand Assante
Following the breakup with Renzo Arbore, Mara Venier experienced a great passion, which lasted only a year, with the Italian-American actor Armand Assante. In 2015 she told the weekly Chi: «It was a great passion, but also very fun: Armand was the madness of my life. He introduced us to Pascal Vicedomini who was then fundamental to… communicating. I don’t speak English, Armand didn’t speak a word of Italian. Of course, when there is a passion involved, words count for little, but Armand and I met with dictionaries in hand. So Pascal acted as our translator and followed me often: to New York, to Bora Bora, to Los Angeles.”
The first meeting with Nicola Carraro
Since 28 June 2006 Mara Venier has been married to the film producer Nicola Carraro. The two, who got married after six years together, met at a dinner organized by Melania Rizzoli, the presenter’s best friend: «Nicola had just returned from abroad and there were many women interested in meeting him – Venier told the Courier -. When I saw him enter the restaurant I thought: “Oh my God, what a Milanese cumenda, it has nothing to do with me!”. And instead, while the other guests tried to impress, we studied ourselves. “I know her, I know she makes excellent pasta and beans,” she told me. Jerry Calà, whose film he had produced, had told him a few years earlier. At that point I even disliked him, I thought he was telling me “I know her, she’s the Sunday lady”, but instead it was pasta and beans… It was a slow courtship.”
23 years of love
«Nobody gave us two cents – Mara recently revealed to Corriere – everyone thought that I was in love with his money and that we would break up very soon. After 23 years of love and 17 of marriage, here we are again.” Obviously in such a long period of time there has been no shortage of difficult moments, but love has always managed to prevail: «The real hard moment in our story was a holiday in Sardinia. A bad summer, constant arguments. When we returned, I said: “Here we split up. We are too different.” But after three days a friend of hers called me to tell me that Nicola was ill, I ran to him and we forgot about everything.”
