Cancun.- Given the impacts and effects of sargassum, we cannot sit back and do nothing, said Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa upon physically receiving the results of the “Study of Valuation of Sargassum, Sludge and EMR” at an industrial level for the generation of carbon credits for the international market.

During a working meeting with the Secretary of Ecology and Environment (SEMA), Óscar Rébora, and the CEO of the company Aenor-México, Rafael García Meiro, Governor Mara Lezama indicated that, compared to other regions, in Quintana Roo “we are doing very well in the issue of sargassum, with the goal of turning a liability into an asset.”

The compendium of the valorisation study contains comprehensive information on the origin of sargassum, the marine ecosystem, the change in ocean currents, the increase in sea fertilisation, the economic and social consequences, and most importantly: what can be done with sargassum.

Governor Mara Lezama stated that the ultimate goal is to mitigate the impacts of this phenomenon, keep the beaches clean and attractive so that more and more tourists come to visit the 12 destinations in Quintana Roo, and at the same time obtain profit from the macroalgae by converting it from a liability to an asset.
