From now on, the Consellería do Mar will authorize the temporary capture of more crab than that established in the management plan – 35 kilos per crew member per day, and another 35 per day per boat – when it is going to be used for promotional events. Of course, it will be an exceptional measure and fishermen who catch these pieces too large must donate them altruistically.
This is indicated in a resolution of the Consellería do Mar that appears published in the Official Gazette of Galicia (DOG) yesterday, and that modifies the sixth point of the crab management plan, which had come into force last July. The new resolution establishes that the catch quotas are 35 kilos per day per crew member and another 35 per boat, also daily. But it gives the opportunity to expand these quotas, “exceptionally, with the exclusive and sole purpose of having spider crab available for the promotion of improved marketing.”
To benefit from this measure, the interested brotherhoods will have to request it, and the fishermen will be able to “donate to the requesting entity the amounts indicated in the authorization.” This could benefit, for example, O Grove, which celebrates successful crab celebrations every year around this time in the town’s restaurants and hotels.
Of course, a series of conditions are imposed for the application of this plan. The first of them is that it will not be allowed during closed seasons. Likewise, communicating the request will not be enough, since the Consellería do Mar must authorize extraction for adults “after consulting the evolution of the state of the resource.”
In addition, there will be control over the amount of crab that is landed in the port for the promotion, since, “the admitted vessels must comply with the official weighing operations and preparation of sales notes in the corresponding fish market.”
This resolution exclusively affects the crab, but could in the future open the door to other species subject to catch limits and for which commercial promotion activities are periodically carried out, as could be the case of the octopus. As far as crustaceans are concerned, O Grove is the most important locality for its fishing and the one that has historically been most distinguished in the promotion of the resource.
