Mapuche community members start dry strike denouncing abandonment of the Government

The Mapuche community members who are serving a sentence in the Angol prison, and who have already been on a hunger strike for 113 days, reported that as of 9 am on Monday they began a dry strike.

This was confirmed by the spokesman for the community members, Rodrigo Curipán, assuring that the measure “of pressure, extreme and regrettable,” was adopted due to “the lack of will of the government in power to tackle the hunger strike.”

He also complemented the fact that the Minister of Justice, Hernán Larraín, “has abandoned the conversation table that we had held since August 9 to fate.”

“The minister does not want to go down to the area to explain how each of the measures that would allow resolving the petition of the Mapuche political prisoners would be carried out. Given this refusal, if they do not address this in person, we ask that they be able to reverse their position “Curipán remarked.

Community members mobilized

In view of the complex situation, in addition, relatives of the community members have asked “the Mapuche people to demonstrate against the mockery of the State and especially our brother Mapuche political prisoners on hunger strike in the prisons of Temucho, Angol and Lebu.”

United, they denounce that “both the Minister of Justice and his team of advisers have engaged in various maneuvers and tricks to delay and break the agreed commitments.”
