Maps: Scientists worried about sea ice. Here’s how it went down

The world’s ice extent recently fell to a record low.

At the same time, sea ice is important not only for the ecosystems around the Arctic and Antarctic, but also has a significant impact on the rate of melting at the edge of the earth, on, as well as on temperature the ocean and global climate.

So its area is monitored by satellites. What they see is shown by maps prepared by Seznam Zpravy using data from the US National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC).

Antarctica

In Antarctica, sea ice loss is less pronounced than in the middle of previous decades. Since it was there until 2016, it is a big event.

Scientists still don’t know exactly what a few “ice-poor” years mean on the frozen continent.

Likewise, they still do not fully understand the mechanism that causes the loss. However, they fear that we may be looking at the future of climate change in the last place in the world that until recently was immune to its effects.

This is what the current sea ice extent looks like in the Antarctic, where the winter is at its highest.

Arctic

The fact that the global extent of sea ice this year fell slightly below last year’s low level affected the Arctic, where the situation is very different.

The sea ice has been shrinking there for a long time, and scientists are convinced that human-caused climate change is contributing to it.

The Arctic began to melt many years before Antarctica. The loss of sea ice is more obvious there at first glance.
