Mapping Pollution in the Rhône Department: Documenting the Traces of Environmental Degradation

For several years, Rue89Lyon has documented the various traces of pollution in the Rhône department. Perfluorinated chemicals, ozone peaks, health risks… Find the stigma on this regularly updated map.

Environmental degradation caused by man is no longer a secret. Whether industrial, atmospheric, sound or even plastic, all affect the ecosystem by endangering fauna and flora.

For around ten years, Rue98Lyon has made it its mission to document this pollution in Lyon and the Rhône through surveys and reports. This is the case when the team looks at one of the department’s biggest files, that of the Arkema factory, located in Pierre-Bénite.

In the Valley of Chemistry, where the latter is located, very high levels of perfluorinated substances (PFAS) have been noted, both in the air, water and soil, and in the breast milk of many women. Known for their anti-stick, anti-grease and anti-stain properties, these perfluorinated compounds are above all “eternal” pollutants. Some are carcinogenic.

It is to report these pollutions, to report them and not to forget them that Rue89Lyon decided to create this map.

A card to report daily pollution

Beyond the sprawling issues of industrial pollution – among which we can also cite the Grézieu-la-Varenne laundry scandal – Rue89Lyon ensures daily monitoring of the consequences of man’s activities on his environment. The location of these effects therefore integrates issues linked to public policies (light pollution), more isolated cases of pollution or symptomatic of a phenomenon (plastic pollution due to overtourism), as well as the evolution of atmospheric pollution in the ozone.

The stakes are high. Every year, deaths from fine particles are recorded, food is banned from sale, fish species are threatened and illnesses are declared among residents living near polluted sites. Although these phenomena are very distinct, they all participate in the same dynamic. It’s time to shine a light on them.

Note that we have chosen to make a distinction between this pollution, resulting from human activity, and the impacts of climate change, for which man also plays his part. To mark this difference, Rue89Lyon holds another card, specifically reserved for the consequences of climate change.
