MAPED – Rain sensors and smart cameras will monitor truck overtaking bans in these 19 places

However, the overtaking ban in case of precipitation remains a fact. After every rainy day, the mailboxes of the cabinet, but also those of the customer and news service of the VRT, are full of complaints from motorists about trucks that ignore the overtaking ban.

Today, Mobility Minister Lydia Peeters announced a breakthrough after a request for an explanation in the mobility committee from Flemish MP Annick Lambrecht (Vooruit). Peeters continues to emphasize that the enforcement of the overtaking ban for trucks during precipitation falls under the competence of the federal level, but that the Flemish Region wants to support the police through precipitation sensors and cameras.

“For that reason, my administration has drawn up a new government contract for the renewal of the cameras. By the end of 2022, we are aiming for 19 locations with installations that can check, among other things, the overtaking ban in the event of precipitation,” says Peeters.
