Map of the Republic melted in the Giant Mountains – Novinky.cz

This year, the Map of the Republic approached its characteristic shape reminiscent of the First Republic Czechoslovakia with Subcarpathian Russia at the beginning of June. At that time there was up to six meters of snow on it. The maximum thickness of snow on the Map of the Republic last winter was 9.5 meters when measured on April 8. Winter was scarce on snow, the amount of snow stored in this monitored locality corresponded to a slight below-average in recent years.

There are several reasons why snow in this part on the southern slope of Studniční hora above Modrý dol stays so long, from terrain modeling to wind currents. Thanks to this, a large amount of snow is stored there in winter. In the spring months, the snow field gradually melts, thus losing the shape of the first-republican Czechoslovakia, until finally “Central Bohemia” and “Prague” remain.

Last year, the maximum thickness of snow in the locality was 14.5 meters and melted on July 22. The year before, the maximum was 7.5 meters and in the 2016/2017 season 9.5 meters. Record values of snow there were measured by the KRNAP Administration in the winter season 1999/2000, the maximum thickness of snow was 15.7 meters. At that time, the snow did not disappear until the first decade of August. On the other hand, the least snow was measured on the map in the 2013/2014 season, at 5.4 meters. Melted on June 10.

The snow field got its name decades ago, when tourists noticed during the thawing of snow that it was taking the form of the first republic of Czechoslovakia. It is located at an altitude of 1420 to 1455 meters in the most strictly protected first zone of KRNAP, so tourists cannot get to it. However, it is clearly visible, for example, from the road between Výrovka and the Memorial to the Victims of the Mountains or from Husova bouda above Pec pod Sněžkou.
