“Airplanes in that formation use the same entry and exit points. The planes then change (direction), towards the Beting Patinggi Ali airspace which is important for the country,” the RMAF statement said.
PLAAF aircraft fly through the Singapore FIR before entering the Malaysian maritime zone airspace and the Kota Kinabalu FIR. It said Chinese planes approached within 60 nautical miles of the Sarawak coast, “threatening Malaysia’s sovereignty”.
A number of Hawk 208 fighter jets from squadron No. 6 placed RMAF on high alert.
“PLAF aircraft were placed under advanced radar surveillance and instructed to contact supervisors at the Kota Kinabalu FIR. When these instructions were not heeded and the PLAAF aircraft crossed the Kota Kinabalu FIR and headed for national airspace, the Malaysian Air Force rushed to intercept the jet at 13:33 to conduct visual identification,” RMAF said in a statement.
